The Organization

The Montecito Firefighters’ Association is the non-union representative organization for the labor force of the Montecito Fire Protection District. It represents firefighters, dispatch, Mechanic, Prevention and Administrative personnel. The fact that no union is needed, that this cooperative organization fulfills all the needs of the district is a testament to the level of function and communication this group demonstrates. They will tell you that it works the way it does because they put their community needs above all else and treat the citizens of their community like family.

What We Did & Why

This is our second project for the Montecito Firefighters and needless to say we jumped at the chance to hang out with them some more because they are an extraordinary group. We relished the opportunity to learn more about them and develop this site.

This site is the first comprehensive collection of information that has ever existed for them publicly and it took both some free-ranging discussion and pointed discussion, brainstorming and gathering of ideas to bring it to fruition. We led the effort and guided them through the process of articulating just what it is they do and how things function.

First, with a deep dive into their purpose, what needs a venue for communication with the community we uncovered the fundamental messages of the site. We discussed their role within the community and their relationship. We discussed the typical work day of station life and nitty gritty of what it means to them to be part of the team.

We took what we learned and packaged it into a structure, a site architecture and later, worked with them on the actual copy for the site, editing and writing to create a cohesive communication piece for the web.

And then, of course, we joined designed the delivery of the content and the container in which the content would be housed.
