2011 to present
Journalist and photographer, Randy Leffingwell has been working on this project with Porsche Archiv to produce a book on the company’s racing history since 2011. Dieter Landenberger, the Archiv Manager at the time, and Jens Torner, the Archiv Photo Manager, proposed the idea.
Randy began his career at the Kansas City Star, then with the Chicago Sun-Times. His interest in automobiles led him to AutoWeek magazine before returning to newspaper journalism at the Los Angeles Times in early 1984 for over eleven years and was fortunate to work on some projects that earned the paper the Pulitzer Prize.
He wrote and photographed his first book, American Muscle, during 1989. In mid-1995, after completing another seven books while still a full-time staffer, he left the Times to become a full-time author.
He is now the author and/or photographer of 54 books.
In his own words,
“As I finished research and interviews for Porsche 60 Years, Porsche’s photo archivist Jens Torner and Director of Archives Dieter Landenberger told me they had a book idea for me: They wanted me to do the History of Porsche Racing. Because it was a subject I had been researching and writing about for nearly 20 years, and one that is of huge interest to me, I hesitated barely a second before agreeing. Then Dieter put it in perspective: “Of course, Randy, you know that since 1949 there have been more than 28,000 Porsche racing victories….””
Working with Randy is always a delight and an experience rich with stories and fascinating history. It’s a matter of setting the stage and getting out of the way to foreground his amazing visual and written work. This current website is the second we’ve developed together.
